What does it mean for Fred and me to Share the Love? Maybe it’s taking on our 6 spirited kids with a sliver of patience and a large slice of humility. Or is it working side by side every day for 10+ years without killing each other? It could also mean the local charity we created, founded on the belief that all children and adults should have access to arts education and expression.
While we deeply appreciate all of these wonderful aspects of our life, we both feel that the impetus for our success has been our livelihood. Fred and I started out with a vision of the American dream — running a small place with a few employees and serving a grassroots clientele. But after opening our first restaurant — Liquid Lunch — in 2004, we realized that we onto something really special.
Word-of-mouth spread like wildfire about how good our food is, and there were more and more customers who wanted to experience it. We needed more staff to keep up, and before we knew it we were opening up other locations. Once we realized we had a talent for this thing, the idea for a truly special farm to table restaurant took hold.
Fred, and our Head Chef at Grow, Alberto Felix, have a way with food that not many people do. Fred balances flavors in a way that it is not merely good, but “Man! That’s amazing!” good. The secret is not an exotic spice, or his onion chopping technique. Fred translates his love into his creations –he is truly an artist. Alberto is also a true artist. He brings a hint of the international into our menu, creating brilliant flavors in our fish entrees, our specials and in other dishes that compliment the comfort food approach of our menu.
I, on the other hand, love to be with people. Always have, always will. I also love color. And music. And that warm feeling you get when you’re around family. And really good food. I love to come to work every day (well, most days!) and I am humbled and grateful that we are able share what we love with you.
The love extends to our staff, who has become family to Fred and me. It doesn’t matter whether you’ve worked with us for 8 years or 8 days- you’re in the fold.
Maybe the best part of this work is the family I have gained in our customers. We have been around long enough to see children grow; people get married, and some have passed on. The daily interactions I have with you — our Grow community — feed my soul.
